Just a 20 Minutes away from Kota Kinabalu lies the five coral islands that make up the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. The largest of these is Gaya (3,665 acres), A trading settlement was built here by the British in 1882, but was later destroyed. The island is still covered by very good lowland rain forest which you can experience by taking a walk along one of the trails of the island. There is also a boardwalk through the mangroves. Gaya is home to a number of birds including in the pied hornbill which is nesting on the island. The other four islands, Sapi, Sulug, Manukan and Mamutik are equally beautiful with white sandy beaches and crystal – clear waters, ideal for snorkeling.
